Today we learned about Hazmat and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). We learned what to do as a first responder and what our responsibilities would be if the need arose. We also discussed the current situation in Japan. I can't imagine that our government would handle such a disaster with any finesse. After all, just look back at hurricane Katrina. We currently have different 10 codes if every county; state rules differ from Federal, and the list goes on and on. It would be so much easier if we developed one large solid communication system rather than several small not-so solid systems.
Well, enough ranting. I learned a lot in today's class. In addition to WMDs, I also learned how to read Hazmat signs. We learned the colors, numbers and even shapes of different rail cars and tractor trailers. I'm sure this information will come in use at some point during my career so I took superb notes and I will make sure to keep them close by.
It was so gorgeous out today (about 70 degrees) that I just had to do something after class. I ended up playing basketball outside on a very small court with a bunch of the guys. It was a lot of fun and hopefully we can do it again tomorrow. It's supposed to be just as warm and I'm hoping the rain will hold off. I think today was the first day we haven't had rain in about two weeks.
